A complaint has been submitted to the Speaker of Parliament against MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, accusing him of violent and disrespectful conduct during the parliamentary session held on 20 May.

The complaint was lodged by Minister Anura Karunatilake and MP Dharmapriya Wijesinghe, along with MP Dr Kaushalya Ariyaratne. According to the letter, Jayasekara disrupted proceedings by deliberately misrepresenting standing orders and behaving aggressively, particularly after being questioned by Dr Ariyaratne and Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake.

The MPs claim that following this exchange, Jayasekara acted in a “highly insulting and threatening” manner, even approaching the area where the chamber’s microphone operators work and verbally intimidating the staff.

The complaint states that such behaviour violates parliamentary privileges, disrespects the dignity expected of elected representatives, and constitutes a serious breach of the rights of parliamentary staff. The letter further notes that Parliament must remain a space for honourable debate and democratic accountability, where discipline and decorum are vital to maintaining institutional integrity.

The MPs assert that Jayasekara’s actions represent a grave violation of the fundamental principles of respect, decorum, and responsibility that must be upheld by Members of Parliament both within the chamber and beyond.

They have urged the Speaker to initiate an appropriate inquiry into the incident and to take necessary action in line with standing orders and the Code of Conduct governing the behaviour of parliamentarians.
