The strike launched by the Joint Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine (JCPSM) came to an end at 8:00 a.m. today (7 June), with four of its five affiliated unions deciding to withdraw from the industrial action.

JCPSM General Secretary Chanaka Dharmawickrama said the decision was taken in light of the inconvenience caused to patients by the nationwide strike.

However, he noted that medical laboratory professionals will continue their strike until further notice.

The strike, which began on 5 June, was launched over several unresolved issues, including delays in promotions, non-payment of weekend and holiday allowances, insufficient recruitment of graduates, salary discrepancies, and unmet agreements on retirement and internship placements.

The industrial action caused widespread disruption to healthcare services, severely affecting patients across the country.

Despite the impact, the unions had initially chosen to continue the strike due to what they described as a lack of meaningful intervention by the Health Minister. Eventually, four unions agreed to end the strike, leaving only the medical laboratory professionals still engaged in industrial action.
