A man who allegedly provided a false tip-off to the Police Emergency Unit (119) claiming that a woman was planning a grenade attack on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during the upcoming Upasampada ceremony at the Galnewa public grounds has been remanded until 1 July.

Kekirawa Magistrate Udari Gunasekara issued the remand order on the suspect, identified as Mahesh Sadaruwan Ratnayake from Hiripitiyagama, Ipalogama.

Police had earlier submitted a B-report to court, stating that the suspect had informed the emergency services that a woman was preparing to target the President with a hand grenade during the religious event scheduled to be held tomorrow. However, investigations revealed that the information was false.

The suspect, when presented in court, admitted that he had made the false report out of spite towards his wife.

Taking the circumstances into account, the magistrate also ordered the Ipalogama Police to submit an update on the progress of the ongoing investigation at the next hearing.

Police further requested that the suspect be remanded, emphasising the seriousness of the false allegation, especially given the President’s expected attendance at the state event.
