Renowned senior civil servant Bradman Weerakoon has passed away at the age of 94, according to family sources.

Weerakoon’s distinguished public service career spanned nearly five decades, during which he served as a senior staff member to nine Sri Lankan leaders — seven Prime Ministers and three Presidents — from 1954 until 2002.

An old boy of Holy Cross College, Kalutara, and one of the first boarders at S. Thomas’ College, Gurutalawa, Weerakoon went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree with second-class honours (upper division) in Economics and Sociology from the University of Ceylon. He later completed his MA in Sociology at the University of Michigan under a Fulbright scholarship.

Joining the Ceylon Civil Service in 1954, Weerakoon first served as Secretary to Prime Minister Sir John Kotelawala and continued to serve successive leaders in key administrative roles, earning a reputation for professionalism and integrity throughout Sri Lanka’s post-independence history.
