A total of 1,870 individuals have died in 1,757 fatal road accidents between 1 January and 4 September this year, police reported.

Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic, Indika Hapugoda, revealed the alarming statistic, noting that around seven to eight people are killed daily in road accidents.

He urged all road users—including drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and passengers—to strictly follow traffic laws, observe road signs, and practise self-discipline to reduce the number of fatalities.
