SriLankan Airlines has announced the temporary suspension of all flights to Nepal until further notice, following the closure of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu on Tuesday afternoon due to escalating violence in the country.
The closure has disrupted hundreds of passengers and led to the cancellation of multiple services. Most international carriers, including major Indian airlines, have also suspended operations.
Indian media reported that several Kathmandu-bound flights were forced to circle near the city before eventually diverting or returning to their points of origin as the situation deteriorated.
Nepal’s aviation authorities issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM) declaring the airport closed, and flights will only resume once the NOTAM is lifted.
The closure has affected more than 250 daily flights typically handled by TIA, impacting carriers such as Air India, IndiGo, FlyDubai, Air Arabia, Singapore Airlines, and Batik Air.
