Samagi Jana Balawegaya National List MP Sujeewa Senasinghe has withdrawn a letter convening the inaugural meeting of a proposed Sri Lanka–Israel Parliamentary Friendship Association, admitting it was sent in error.
The withdrawn notice, dated 4 September, had invited MPs to join the proposed association and attend an inaugural meeting scheduled for 12 September in Parliament.
Sujeewa Senasinghe’s notice came against the backdrop of several prominent SJB MPs, including the Opposition Leader, strongly opposing Israel’s occupation and condemning the ongoing civilian deaths in Gaza.
In a statement, Senasinghe described the letter as the result of an “error and lapse” and confirmed that he had informed parliamentary authorities in writing to cancel the initiative.
“The letter convening the Israel–Sri Lanka friendship society was a genuine mistake,” he said, adding that it had been withdrawn with immediate effect.
Senasinghe also expressed regret over the incident and apologised to Parliament, the parties concerned, and the public for any inconvenience caused.
