Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam has said that few people have actually read the Supreme Court’s ruling on the country’s bankruptcy.
Speaking on the Derana 360 program, he noted that most people are only familiar with the societal opinion surrounding the verdict, rather than its actual content.
He emphasized that the court ruling attributes the country’s financial collapse to the actions of previous governments, including delayed engagement with the International Monetary Fund and reductions in taxes, which “contributed” to the crisis.
Kariyawasam added that violating fundamental rights is one matter, but undermining the economy is entirely different.
He further clarified that the verdict does not state that the current government is responsible for the bankruptcy; it merely identifies certain “contributions” to the situation.
