More than 200 elderly individuals have lodged complaints through a newly established WhatsApp number, seeking maintenance from their children, the National Secretariat for Elders announced.
The “Sarana Upakara” (Support and Aid) service, accessible via the WhatsApp number 0707 89 88 89, was introduced to provide a direct and accessible channel for senior citizens to report neglect and seek legal support.
Chathura Mihidum, the Director of the Secretariat, stated that the response has been significant, highlighting a growing issue of elder neglect. He confirmed that new maintenance boards have been established specifically to hear and process these incoming complaints.
Furthermore, the Director revealed plans to streamline the process for complainants. In the future, arrangements will be made to connect individuals with the maintenance boards online, directly from their local Divisional Secretariat offices, making the process more convenient for the elderly.
