National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader and former MP Wimal Weerawansa has accused the police of deliberately distorting and selectively releasing parts of the statement he provided to the Tangalle Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit regarding his recent comments about Beliatte Sanaa, also known as Puwakdandawe Sanaa.

In a statement issued today, Weerawansa said that following a notification from the Tangalle Police Division, he appeared before the officers on 9 October and gave a full statement, along with all relevant details, concerning the matter.

However, he claimed that the police had released only selected excerpts from his nearly three-hour statement to the media, omitting key sections and presenting a “distorted version” that misrepresents what he said.

“The police have intentionally edited and released only parts of my statement to the media. By doing so, they seem to be attempting to conceal the truth about Puwakdandawa Sanaa and his political affiliations,” Weerawansa alleged.

He further stated that rather than investigating the facts and uncovering the truth, the police had “manipulated” his testimony to serve their own purposes, thereby calling into question their independence.

“The statement released to the media is a completely distorted one. This behaviour is unbecoming of a law-respecting police institution and more fitting for a political propaganda unit of the government,” Weerawansa said.

He reaffirmed that the original statement he gave contained details that are now being deliberately suppressed and said the matter raises serious concerns about the integrity and transparency of the ongoing investigation.
