The Chief Guest at the opening ceremony was the Minister of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure Honourable Harin Fernando and Inspector General of Police Mr. Pujith Jayasundara was participated as a Guest of Honour. Also many industry experts from local telecom operators and IT companies were gathered for this event.

Addressing the audience at the event, Minister Harin Fernando stated, “It is wonderful to see the vision of Eranga and the rest of his team at Omobio and I am sure with the vision that you have and the passion of the team the company will continue to excel into the future. At the Ministry, what Eranga envisions is what we also see for the long-term when it comes to building the digital infrastructure of Sri Lanka.”
Outlining the significant progress made by the Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure, Minister Fernando stated, “By next year, we’re planning on creating 100 digital classrooms, providing students from Grade 9 and above with tablets and keypads, thereby encouraging them to start coding from that age itself. This goes with our long-term vision that every curriculum and every text book will be replaced by a tablet. This will contribute to our goal of creating a knowledge-based economy instead of directing students who pass out into Government jobs. We don’t want our graduates to migrate to greener pastures. We want them to stay in Sri Lanka and contribute towards this knowledge-based economy. That is one of the reasons we have signed MoUs with global tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, Ericsson, Oracle and Huawei during the past one year. We have signed these agreements to develop research innovation centres and carry out student exchange programmes. These innovation centres will act as incubators plus accelerators for young entrepreneurs to start innovating and take their products to the international stage. This will also help top tech companies such as Omobio to hire the best new talent locally. Additionally, while we produce some of the best software in the world, we need to market ourselves better globally. One of the many steps we have taken is to appoint BPO/KPO ambassadors to India. We’ve also appointed an ambassador to make inroads into Silicon Valley, a successful effort which resulted in Sri Lanka getting the Google Loon project.”
Looking ahead at the Ministry’s future plans, the Minister added, “From January next year we will be completely digitizing the Sri Lankan economy. We hope to make it a cashless society, where every transaction is digitized, in 3 years. Of course, connectivity plays a vital role in all this and therefore we are trying to design a network sharing model to share our resources of networks and towers.”
