The UPFA is the present governing party of Sri Lanka. It was formed in January 2004 after an agreement between the People’s Alliance and the Janatha Vimukthi Peranuma (JVP). In the April 2004 election, it won the largest number of seats and came to power.
The JVP has since left the alliance but the UPFA currently comprises of more than 10 political parties, the largest being the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. In the April 2010 General Election, the party won 160 seats, the first time when a 2/3 majority was won under the Proportional Representation system. The leader of the UPFA is President Mahinda Rajapaksa and General Secretary is Susil Premjayanth.
