Wimal Weerawansa is the leader of the Sri Lankan political party Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (National Freedom Front) and the Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities in UPFA government.
Born in 1970, he joined Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna in 1980s when he was schooling at Kalutara Tissa Central College. Later, he worked as a political columnist and cartoonist at the 'Lakmina' newspaper with the alias name "Wimalasiri Gamlath." He served a long term as the Propaganda Secretary of the JVP, leaving the party in 2008 when the party decided to abstain from voting at the 2008 budget debate. In May 2008 he formed the NFF and later joined the UPFA.
