The husband of national champion shooter Tara Sahdev has been arrested near Delhi after she accused him of deceiving her into marriage, forcibly converting her to Islam, and keeping her captive for a month. A court in Delhi today gave the Jharkhand Police a three day transit remand of the accused.
Tara, 23, who won the gold medal in the 2009 Eastern Zone championship, says that when she married in July in her home state of Jharkand, she believed that her 30-year-old husband was Ranjeet Singh Kohli.
However, she says that during the month of Ramadan, invitation cards to Iftar parties received by her husband addressed him as Rakibul Hussain. She says that her mother-in-law and spouse then forced her to convert, warned her not to share her experience with anybody, and kept her hostage for a month in their home. She claims that in August, when her husband was away to Delhi, she managed to send SOS text messages to her family who then rescued her.
But in an email sent to media companies, her husband claimed that he is a Hindu and that Tara's allegations are false and that she demanded 15 lakhs to marry him.
"Does anyone pay Rs.15 lakh to marry a girl? There is enough evidence against him but police are not investigating the case properly," Tara told reporters.
The First Information Report or FIR - the first step in the filing of formal charges - accuses her husband of promoting enmity between different religious groups and acts that endanger communal harmony.
