South African soccer captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed Sunday night in the Vosloorus township near Johannesburg, according to information posted on the South African Police Service's Twitter account.
Meyiwa played for the Orlando Pirates. The team said on its website: "The Orlando Pirates Football Club family has learned with sadness about the untimely death of our number one goalkeeper and current captain Senzo Meyiwa."
The team chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza, said on the website: "This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it -- to Senzo's family, his extended family, Orlando Pirates and to the nation."
The SAP said on Twitter that the shooting occurred inside a house with seven people inside and that three suspects fled. A reward has been offered.
