Mumbai Commuters Panic As Train Climbs Platform

Dramatic footage has emerged in India which shows a local train in the western city of Mumbai overshooting the end of the track and crashing into the barrier before coming to a halt.

Passengers waiting at the Churchgate station are seen running away as the front coach climbs on to the platform.

The video shows passengers jumping in panic once the train stops.

Five passengers were injured and the suburban train services were disrupted for a while after Sunday's accident.

Officials said miraculously, no-one suffered any serious injuries.

Railway authorities have blamed "human error" for the accident. They said they were trying to ascertain why the driver failed to halt the train in time.

"We have launched an inquiry into the incident and the motorman of the locomotive LS Tiwari, guard Ajay Gohil and loco inspector MG Verma have been suspended," Press Trust of India quoted railway official Shailendra Kumar as saying.

Tiwari told officials that the brakes did not function properly when the train entered the station, reports the Mid-day newspaper.

"I tried to apply the brakes, but the train barely slowed down. Meri aankhon ke saamne maut dekha (I saw death right before my eyes)," he added.
