BIA Expands Self-Service Facilities with 20 New Check-In Kiosks

Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) has introduced 20 additional self-service check-in kiosks to enhance efficiency and passenger convenience.

Passenger traffic at the BIA increased by 16% in the first half of 2025, reaching five million, with total traffic expected to rise to 14 million by 2027.

The newly installed kiosks, which complement the existing eight, come with a self-bag-drop facility aimed at reducing congestion during peak travel hours. These upgrades allow passengers to complete the entire check-in process independently — including flight check-in, seat selection, and the printing of boarding passes and bag tags — before dropping off their luggage and proceeding to emigration counters.

Additionally, passengers departing from BIA are now permitted to check in up to four hours before their scheduled departure time, a change implemented last week to further streamline the travel experience.
