The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has identified several locations on the slopes of the Ambuluwawa mountain as high-risk landslide zones and has recommended the immediate evacuation of residents living in 18 homes in the affected areas.

According to the Bureau, these zones should be declared highly sensitive to landslides and preserved as no-build areas, prohibiting construction and development activities.

An inspection team from the GSMB that entered the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex observed a visible ground fissure near the entrance and then inspected nearby houses. The team reported that seven houses were located within a high-risk zone, while a further six were within a medium-risk zone.

GSMB teams also inspected additional slopes elsewhere on the mountain. Their assessment found that in the Wathekade area, 11 homes and buildings were in high-risk zones, while 12 were located in medium-risk zones.

Officials have recommended that all high-risk lands be fully restricted from construction and development and designated as conservation zones due to their susceptibility to landslides.

Residents living in medium-risk areas have been advised to evacuate temporarily during periods of heavy rainfall or upon receiving early warning alerts.
