The Education Ministry has launched a formal investigation into an incident involving the head prefect of a leading boys’ school in Colombo, following allegations of inappropriate conduct that surfaced on social media this week.
According to official sources, the incident centres on alleged indecent behaviour involving the student and several adults connected to the school community, including three teachers and the parent of another student. The matter came to public attention after related content began circulating online.
In response to the questions raised by the journlists during the weekly Cabinet media briefing, Cabinet Spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa said the Education Ministry had intervened due to the seriousness of the allegations and the potential implications for child protection, professional ethics, and the integrity of educational institutions. He stressed that the investigation has been initiated in accordance with existing laws and safeguarding protocols.
The Minister also confirmed that a complaint has been lodged with relevent authorities over the circulation of material linked to the incident, citing concerns over privacy violations and the potential harm caused to those involved, particularly the student.
The journalists warned against the sharing of unverified or private material on social media, noting that such actions could result in severe psychological, social, and legal consequences. The Government described the episode as reflective of a broader erosion of social values and digital responsibility.
The Government reiterated its position that existing gaps in self-regulation on social media platforms have contributed to the rapid spread of harmful content. It said the incident underscored the importance of the proposed Online Safety framework, which aims to safeguard individual dignity and privacy, particularly where minors are concerned.
The Minister urged the public and media organisations to exercise restraint and adhere to ethical standards while the investigation is ongoing, emphasising that due process must be respected and that no party should be prejudged.
