The government is considering restricting access to social media platforms for children under the age of 12, Minister of Women and Child Affairs Savithri Paulraj said.
The minister said discussions on the matter have already begun, with proposals including a complete ban on mobile phone use by children under 12, as well as measures to prevent their access to social media platforms.
She noted that several countries have already introduced legislation limiting social media use among schoolchildren, adding that Sri Lanka is examining such international models in formulating its own approach.
According to the minister, the proposed restrictions are being considered in response to a rise in morally harmful and abusive incidents linked to children’s internet usage.
Meanwhile, the government has decided to introduce new legislation to address cybercrimes targeting children. The proposed law has already received Cabinet approval, she said.
