A 14-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her father following a dispute over a mobile phone on the night of 30 January, police said.

The victim, a resident of Delkada in Uragasmanhandiya, sustained critical injuries after the suspect allegedly attacked her with a billhook during an altercation at their home.

She was admitted to Elpitiya Hospital for treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.

The suspect has been taken into custody, while the body of the deceased has been placed in the hospital mortuary, police said.

Further investigations are being carried out by Uragasmanhandiya Police.
