Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate allegations of misuse of the President’s Fund.

This follows public outrage over reports that politicians received millions from the fund, while ordinary citizens face extensive scrutiny and a tedious process to obtain even a few lakhs.

Chief Government Whip Nalinda Jayatissa disclosed a list of such politicians in Parliament on 17 December. During a recent Cabinet media briefing, Jayatissa promised to release further details on the matter in the coming days.
