Canadian Teen Arrested at BIA With Hashish Worth Rs. 352 Million

Sri Lanka Customs officers at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) have arrested an 18-year-old Canadian woman after allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 35 kilograms of hashish into the country.

The suspect arrived in Sri Lanka from Toronto, Canada, via Dubai on Emirates flight EK648 at around 10:40 p.m. on June 23. During an inspection of her two checked-in suitcases, officers attached to the Customs Narcotics Control Unit (NCU) discovered 35.265 kilograms of hashish concealed inside the luggage.

Customs estimated the street value of the seized narcotics at approximately Rs. 352.65 million.

Preliminary investigations are being conducted by the NCU, while the suspect and the seized drugs are to be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigations and legal action.
