The Government has decided to review the Protection of Occupants Bill that has been presented to Parliament, the Attorney General informed the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka yesterday (9).

The submission was made when petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Bill were taken up for consideration. Appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmavardhana told the Court that the Government had opted to reconsider the proposed legislation.

He further informed the bench that the Justice Minister has allowed a one-month period, commencing 3 February, to invite public views and proposals on the Bill.

In view of the Government’s decision to revisit the legislation, the Supreme Court decided to conclude the hearing of the petitions filed in relation to the Bill.
