Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila claimed yesterday that the Government’s national voter base has dropped to below 25%, citing the findings of a recent island-wide opinion survey.
Addressing a media briefing, Gammanpila said a confidential report compiled by a private polling firm had been submitted to the President around two weeks ago. According to him, the survey indicates a sharp erosion of public support for the Government, leaving it unable to secure victory in any Provincial Council election.
“The Government knows it cannot win a single Provincial Council,” Gammanpila said, alleging that this decline in popularity was the real reason behind continued delays in holding long-overdue Provincial Council polls.
He further claimed that the ruling alliance’s support had fallen significantly since the May 2025 local government elections, where it secured around 43% of the vote. Subsequent political controversies, governance failures, and public dissatisfaction, he argued, have contributed to what he described as a rapid collapse in voter confidence.
Gammanpila alleged that within months, the Government’s vote base had contracted by nearly a third, calling it one of the steepest declines in electoral support seen in Sri Lanka’s recent political history.
“If these claims are untrue,” he said, challenging the Government, “there is nothing preventing it from facing the electorate immediately.”
