The Government has acknowledged delays in repatriating Sri Lankans stranded in the Middle East due to airport closures and flight restrictions imposed amid the ongoing security situation in the region.
Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, addressing a special media briefing at the Government Information Department today (3), said that the suspension and limitation of air travel had made it difficult to bring affected Sri Lankans back to the country without delay.
He stated that, in the meantime, the Government is working through Sri Lanka’s diplomatic missions to ensure the welfare and necessary assistance of those stranded. The missions are operating on a 24-hour basis to provide support and coordinate required services, he said.
According to the Minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment have been engaged in facilitating assistance through overseas missions.
Sri Lankans seeking support may contact the Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 0094 7425 95546 or the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment on 0094 719 802 822.
In addition, the emergency hotline 1989 remains operational. The Minister urged Sri Lankans working in the Middle East to use these contact numbers to obtain any necessary assistance.
