Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody has resigned from his post with immediate effect, stating that he would step down until ongoing investigations into coal procurement are concluded and the truth is established.
In a letter addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on 17 April, Jayakody said his decision was taken to ensure that the investigative process proceeds independently and without any interference.
“I resign from my ministerial portfolio until the investigation is concluded and the truth is established,” he stated.
The minister’s resignation comes amid heightened scrutiny over alleged irregularities in coal imports, with the Government recently deciding to appoint a Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry and initiate a formal probe through the Criminal Investigation Department into coal procurement processes dating back to 2009.
In his letter, Jayakody commended the President’s decision to pursue investigations, describing it as a reflection of a “strong commitment against corruption” and to upholding the public mandate.
“I highly appreciate your determination to act against corruption and ensure transparent governance in line with the mandate received from the people. I believe such measures are essential not only for the present but also for future generations, and that the truth will be revealed through these processes,” he noted.
Referring to the recent no-confidence motion brought against him in Parliament, Jayakody expressed gratitude to the Government for the confidence placed in him and firmly denied any wrongdoing.
“I state with a clear conscience that I have not been involved, directly or indirectly, in any act that would undermine that trust,” he said.
He further emphasised that he believed the investigations must be conducted impartially, adding that his continued presence in office could be perceived as an obstacle to that process.
“It is my firm view that these investigations must be carried out independently and without bias. Therefore, I have decided to resign from the position of Minister of Energy with immediate effect,” he stated.
Jayakody also affirmed that he would accept any outcome of the তদন্ত and continue to support the Government’s broader efforts to establish a clean political culture.
“I will abide by any decision arising from the investigations and will continue to support the programme pursued by you and the Government to build a transparent political system,” he added.
Meanwhile, Energy Ministry Secretary Udayanga Hemapala also announced his resignation.
