Media spokesman for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Attorney-at-Law Manoj Gamage, claims that the decision to summon the former President before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption today (12) was aimed at fulfilling promises allegedly given by the current Government to the LTTE diaspora.

Responding to questions raised by journalists today, Gamage stated that the public would not tolerate what he described as political revenge being carried out against the leader who brought an end to Sri Lanka’s 30-year civil war.

He further alleged that there was a clear political conspiracy behind summoning Rajapaksa during the month in which the war was won and Velupillai Prabhakaran was killed.

According to Gamage, the move was an attempt by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to “take revenge” on Mahinda Rajapaksa over Prabhakaran’s death.

He also claimed that there were allegations that the current Government came to power with financial support from the LTTE diaspora, and that the summons formed part of promises allegedly given to those groups.

Gamage further stated that the move was inhumane given the former President’s age and existing health conditions.

He added that it would not be possible to prevent supporters of Mahinda Rajapaksa from gathering near the Bribery Commission in response to the summons.
