The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) today (14) informed the Fort Magistrate’s Court that the CCTV cameras installed at the residence of former cricketer Aravinda de Silva, where former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena’s suspicious death occurred, had been operational, but the system had not been recording footage for a considerable period.
The CCD further stated that no footage of the specific location where the death took place had been captured by the CCTV system.
The revelations were made before Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena during the magisterial witness examination into Chandrasena’s death, where six witnesses also testified before court.
Presenting a further report, the CCD informed court that investigators had obtained a search warrant on 12 May to inspect another residence belonging to Chandrasena and had subsequently recovered a laptop and several documents from the premises. The items were produced before court as case productions.
During the proceedings, Magistrate Amarasena questioned investigators on whether CCTV footage from the location of the death had been taken into police custody.
In response, the investigating officer stated that although the CCTV cameras at Aravinda de Silva’s residence had been functioning, the system itself had not been recording footage for a long time.
However, the officer added that investigators had taken into police custody CCTV footage from nearby houses covering the entry and exit routes to the residence where the death occurred.
