Former MP Jagath Kumara said he was unaware of the nature of former Minister Basil Rajapaksa’s illness, noting that the distance between Sri Lanka and the country where Rajapaksa is currently staying made it difficult to obtain such information.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) headquarters, Jagath Kumara said the party was only aware that Basil Rajapaksa had been unwell.

“I believe the relevant facts have already been submitted to the court. There is a considerable distance between where we are and the country where he is staying. Therefore, we do not know where he is, what illness he is suffering from, or the details of his condition. The only information we have is that he has been unwell,” he said.

Responding to a question on whether Basil Rajapaksa would return to Sri Lanka to appear in court, Jagath Kumara said it was a matter that should be answered by Rajapaksa himself.

“That is a question that should be directed to him. He will intervene on this matter in due course. No one is trying to evade the courts or avoid judicial proceedings. He will appear before the court,” he said.
