The Health and Education Ministries have held several rounds of discussions on introducing age-appropriate sex education for schoolchildren, Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said today (26).
Responding to a journalist’s question during the weekly Cabinet decisions media briefing, Jayatissa said the Health Ministry had already forwarded proposals to the Education Ministry and that further steps would be taken through ongoing discussions between the two ministries.
“The Health Ministry and the Education Ministry have had several rounds of discussions regarding age-appropriate sex education for schoolchildren. The Health Ministry has submitted proposals to the Education Ministry. Progressive discussions are taking place and the next steps will be taken accordingly,” he said.
Jayatissa stressed that regardless of individual beliefs or personal views, there needed to be an understanding of the importance of age-appropriate sexual health education for children.
