Two more suspects, including the owner of the cab involved in the fatal Meegoda road accident that claimed six lives, were arrested by Meegoda Police today (6).
Police said the suspects surrendered to the Meegoda Police Station through a lawyer this morning and are due to be produced before court.
The arrests were made in connection with the crash that occurred on the Avissawella–Colombo High Level Road within the Meegoda Police Division, when a cab allegedly ploughed into a group of people waiting in line at a Dansala.
Six people were killed and seven others sustained serious injuries in the incident.
The cab driver was arrested shortly after the accident and was produced before the Homagama Magistrate’s Court on 1 June. The court ordered that he be remanded until 16 June.
Subsequent investigations revealed that three other individuals had been travelling in the cab at the time of the crash. Police said the suspects fled the area after the driver was taken into custody.
On Friday, Police sought public assistance to trace the three individuals and released their photographs and details.
With the latest arrests, two of the three suspects who allegedly fled the scene have now been taken into custody. Investigations are continuing to locate the remaining suspect.
