Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is in very good health following a recent surgical procedure, according to former minister Harin Fernando.
Speaking to the media after the United National Party’s Working Committee meeting held on Thursday (11) under Wickremesinghe’s leadership, Fernando said the former President had recovered well and actively participated in discussions on the party’s future plans.
Fernando said the meeting focused on strengthening the party ahead of the UNP’s upcoming 80th anniversary celebrations and discussed strategies for advancing future political activities in collaboration with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).
He noted that extensive discussions were also held on appointing new organisers, reactivating youth associations, and revitalising the party machinery with a fresh approach.
Addressing reporters, Fernando said it was the first Working Committee meeting held in more than three months and that Wickremesinghe had briefed members on the party’s future direction and its engagement with the SJB.
“He joked that after the bypass surgery, not only his mind but his backbone is stronger too,” Fernando said.
He added that the discussions centred on party organisation, the appointment of organisers, the revival of youth leagues, and the implementation of new programmes aimed at strengthening the UNP.
Fernando also quipped that Wickremesinghe appeared “10 years younger” following his surgery, drawing laughter from those present.
