Former President Maithripala Sirisena said he was not in a position to comment on the recent fuel price revisions or the country’s economic situation, as he was no longer involved in active politics.

Responding to questions from journalists, Sirisena said he was neither governing the country nor an economic expert, and therefore could not make definitive remarks on such matters. He noted that economic decisions should be assessed in the context of international developments and other external factors, including conflicts affecting the global economy.

The former President further stated that he had stepped away from active politics and would welcome any government that succeeded in improving the country’s economy and the living standards of its people.

Speaking further, Sirisena remarked that he personally felt the economic pressures more acutely than many others, claiming that he no longer received a pension.

“You have a salary, don’t you? At least you receive some income. I don’t even have a pension. So in that sense, it is harder for me than it is for you,” he said.
