The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has instructed Cinnamon Gardens Police to file charges in connection with an incident in which a funeral wreath was placed outside the official residence of former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella in Colombo 7.
The order was issued yesterday (22) by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama when the case against Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa, President of the Doctors’ Trade Union Alliance for Civil Rights, was taken up before court.
The suspect, who is currently out on bail, appeared before court during the hearing. Police informed the court that the facts of the case had been referred to the Attorney General for legal advice.
The Magistrate subsequently directed police to file charges against the suspect under Sections 486 and 433 and produce the matter before court.
The investigation was initiated following a complaint lodged by Hirunika Rambukwella, daughter of former minister Keheliya Rambukwella.
In her complaint, she alleged that the act of placing a funeral wreath outside the official residence amounted to criminal intimidation and an act of insult directed at her father.
