The Government is considering introducing drug test kits that parents can purchase from pharmacies to privately check whether their children are using narcotics.
The proposal was discussed at a meeting of the ‘Ratama Ekata’ National Operations Committee, established to combat drug abuse, held at the Presidential Secretariat with the participation of senior Buddhist clergy and other religious leaders.
During the meeting, discussions also focused on strengthening the capabilities of the Police Narcotics Bureau, improving the efficiency of the Government Analyst’s Department, introducing modern technological systems to expedite the issuance of forensic reports, and amending laws relating to narcotic drugs.
The committee further discussed finalising the draft legislation on the rehabilitation of persons addicted to drugs. The Government said the draft Bill is expected to be gazetted shortly.
