On 7 February 2025 at 6:30 PM, the Panibharatha Hall at the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo, will transform into a mesmerizing realm of artistry as Veronica Dassanayake presents her one-person Kathak dance performance, titled “Blue.”

“Blue” is not just a performance—it is a kaleidoscope of emotions, a visual poem, and an artistic exploration of the intricate clash between human relationships and the forces of nature. With its deep, innovative concepts expressed through the fluidity of Kathak dance movements, the show promises to captivate hearts and minds.

The visionary behind “Blue”, Veronica Dassanayake, began her journey as a dancer during her school years. Her passion for movement led her to train in Upland Dance under the guidance of Professor Waidyawathi Rajapaksha. She later pursued her love for Kathak at the prestigious Bhatkhande University in Lucknow, India, where she earned a Bachelor of Performing Arts with first-class honours, studying under the celebrated Kathak maestro, Guru Arjun Mishra.

Her dedication to the craft brought her unparalleled recognition, including Kathak Nritya Visharad and Nipun first-class passes, and culminated in a master’s degree from Colombo’s University of Visual and Performing Arts. As a trailblazer, she joined the Sri Lanka Army Dance Team in 2017, becoming its first female Major and spearheading the creation of an Indian Dance Team among the nation’s armed forces—a historic achievement.

“Blue” is a culmination of Veronica’s years of research, experience, and passion. The performance is backed by a talented team, including her Kathak dance school, Sri Brindavan Kathak Kendra, and Scholars Institute of Higher Education. Lecturer Darshana Priyaratne serves as the show’s performance coordinator, supported by Dishani Danushika, Principal of Scholars Institute, alongside Sathi Perera and costume designer Niki Sera, who bring Veronica’s vision to life.

At its core, “Blue” is a heartfelt message to humanity, intertwining themes of nature, humanity, and the cosmos through the lens of the colour blue. Veronica’s artistry transcends mere performance, using Kathak as a medium to spark reflection and connection in every viewer.

Don’t miss this extraordinary dance journey—a vibrant ode to the harmony and discord between man and the universe. “Blue” is more than a performance; it’s an invitation to immerse yourself in a world of beauty, rhythm, and meaning.
