The Chinese military said on Monday that a Canadian warship that passed through the Taiwan Strait was “undermines peace.”
A Chinese military spokesman said in a statement that Canada’s actions “deliberately create trouble and undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
Beijing said it would “resolutely counter all threats and provocations” by sending its air and naval forces around the area, the statement said.
Canada did not immediately respond. The ship passed through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense said that “Canada has once again taken concrete steps to safeguard the freedom, peace and openness of the Taiwan Strait and demonstrated its firm position that the Taiwan Strait is international waters.”
The Canadian ship passed through the Taiwan Strait just days after two American ships, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said.
A U.S. destroyer and ocean survey ship that passed through the strait also angered China, saying it “sent the wrong signal and increased security risks.” They were the first ships to pass through the strait since Donald Trump took office as U.S. president in January.
The United States and its allies, including Canada, Britain and France, consider the Taiwan Strait an international waterway and often use it for shipping.
Taiwan, a self-ruled island, is considered part of China. The Taiwan Strait separates Taiwan from mainland China, and Beijing claims jurisdiction over the body of water.
Days after China conducted military exercises around the island last year, a US and Canadian warship sailed together in the strait.
Also on Monday, Taiwan’s defence ministry said 41 Chinese aircraft and nine warships had been spotted near its territory in the past 24 hours.
