A male teacher at a school under the Zonal Education Office in Embilipitiya allegedly assaulted a female teacher yesterday (7 March).

National People’s Power (NPP) Monaragala District MP Chathuri Gangani made a special statement in Parliament today (8 March), condemning the incident and demanding immediate action. She confirmed that the assault occurred in the presence of the school principal and that the injured teacher is currently receiving medical treatment.

Gangani expressed her deep disappointment, highlighting that such violence against women persists despite the country’s observance of International Women’s Day and Women’s Week.

In response, Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya stated that she was informed of the incident this morning and assured that legal action would be taken. She further noted that the Ministry of Education would be notified to initiate disciplinary measures and that a detailed report would be presented in Parliament within the day.
