South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun has strongly denied accusations made by the family of actress Kim Sae-ron, who tragically passed away in February, in a tearful press conference on Monday. The 37-year-old star, known for his roles in hit series like My Love from the Star and Queen of Tears, refuted claims that he had dated Kim Sae-ron when she was a minor and that his agency had pressured her over a loan repayment.
Speaking emotionally, Kim Soo-hyun said, “I can’t admit to something I didn’t do,” as he rejected the allegations at the press conference held in Seoul. The controversy, which began in March, revolves around two primary accusations: that Kim Soo-hyun had a romantic relationship with Kim Sae-ron when she was 15 and that his agency pushed her to repay a debt owed to him.
Kim Soo-hyun, who was visibly upset, clarified that their relationship was strictly adult, dating between 2019 and 2020 when Kim Sae-ron was over 18. He further expressed regret over the situation, apologizing to fans and staff and acknowledging the pain caused by the controversy, particularly with respect to Kim Sae-ron’s untimely death.
The scandal erupted after a controversial YouTube channel claimed the two had been in a six-year relationship, beginning when Kim Sae-ron was just 15. The channel also released supposed photos and chat records, which sparked public outcry. Kim Soo-hyun’s agency initially denied the accusations but later confirmed that they had dated as adults.
In response to claims by Kim Sae-ron’s family that his agency pressured her to repay a debt from a drink-driving incident, Kim Soo-hyun released a voice recording from his agency that appeared to downplay the seriousness of the debt issue, claiming it was a “procedural” matter.
“I never dated her when she was a minor,” Kim reiterated. He also explained why he kept their relationship private, citing his concerns over the impact it could have had on the production of Queen of Tears during its airing.
In the wake of the scandal, Kim Soo-hyun has faced backlash from both the public and brand partners. Fashion brand Prada and cosmetics company Dinto have ended their collaborations with him, and a Disney+ project he was starring in has been put on hold. His legal team has filed a lawsuit for damages worth 12 billion won against Kim Sae-ron’s family and the YouTube channel responsible for spreading the allegations.
As of now, Kim Sae-ron’s family has yet to comment on the latest developments or the lawsuits filed by Kim Soo-hyun’s camp.
