The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) has urged the government to ensure proper payment of allowances for principals and teachers involved in the 2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) examination duties, citing confusion caused by conflicting circulars from the Department of Examinations.

Speaking at a press conference, CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin highlighted the issue, saying, “The Advanced Level Examination is being conducted these days, and a new problem has arisen due to two letters issued by the Examination Commissioner.”

Stalin explained that the first circular, issued on 11 November, stated that staff traveling over 10 kilometers to exam centers would receive a transportation allowance of Rs. 1,000. However, a subsequent circular on 12 December significantly reduced these allowances.

  • Over 10 km: Reduced from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 500
  • 5–10 km: Reduced from Rs. 750 to Rs. 400
  • 2–5 km: Reduced from Rs. 500 to Rs. 300
  • Under 2 km: Reduced from Rs. 300 to Rs. 200

Stalin criticised the move, stating, “While there was an initial directive to pay the exam invigilators, the sudden reduction has caused serious confusion among the staff.”

The union has called on the authorities to resolve the issue promptly to avoid further disruptions to the ongoing A/L examination process.
