The much-anticipated Batalanda Commission report has been formally handed over to the Attorney General, the President’s Media Division (PMD) announced today (29 April).

Minister Bimal Rathnayake, during the first day of the parliamentary debate on 10 April on the report, revealed that steps would be taken to hold accountable those implicated in the findings.

Minister Rathnayake further stated that the government would consider seeking international assistance if necessary to ensure legal proceedings against the individuals responsible for the events outlined in the report. The debate on the Batalanda Commission’s findings will continue in an upcoming parliamentary session, with the second day of discussions yet to be scheduled.

The Batalanda Commission was established to investigate allegations of human rights violations and abuse of power during the period of the previous administration, and the report has been highly anticipated due to its potential legal and political implications.
