Four Seniors Behind Bars Till 16 May Over Sabaragamuwa Uni Ragging Horror

Four third-year students from the Faculty of Technology at Sabaragamuwa University have been remanded until 16 May after being arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over an alleged ragging incident that pushed a student to die by suicide.

The students were produced before the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court today (5 May), following their arrest on 4 May. According to the Police Media Division, the arrests were made in connection with a complaint that had been lodged with the Samanalawewa Police on 29 April. The complaint alleged that second-year students at the Faculty of Technology had been subjected to ragging by their seniors.

Acting on the complaint, the CID launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the four suspects. The Inspector General of Police, in response to the seriousness of the allegations, had issued a directive on 3 May instructing the CID to carry out further investigations into the matter.
