The Sri Lanka Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRCSL) announced that Starlink will commence its satellite broadband internet service in the country after this week, starting with the first 12 users.

Director General of the Commission, retired Air Vice Marshal Bandula Herath, made this announcement during a media briefing held yesterday (16).

He stated that a total of 112 Starlink technical equipment kits required to provide the service have already been imported to Sri Lanka. Out of these, 12 kits have been distributed to the first batch of customers this week.

“Starlink informed us that they have brought in 112 equipment kits needed for the satellite broadband service. They have already begun distributing the first 12 kits to their customers. They have also informed us that after completing the distribution of these kits by the end of this week, they will notify us accordingly,” Herath explained.

He added that Starlink’s initial service rollout will be closely monitored by the TRCSL in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence.

“Our oversight will focus on ensuring the service is technically sound, secure, and delivered properly to consumers. Following a one-week observation period by both our agency and the Ministry of Defence, we will take the necessary steps to authorise Starlink to expand its service offering to local customers,” Herath said.
