The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in collaboration with the Government of Japan, is supporting the Alliance Development Trust (ADT) in a nationwide effort to build social cohesion and climate resilience through the leadership of young people.

Under the project titled “Youth-led promotion of social cohesion by addressing challenges in relation to Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), Gender and Climate Action”, more than 1,000 youth from across Sri Lanka have been empowered on the interconnected themes of gender equality, climate justice, and SRHR. This initiative recognises the vital role these issues play in fostering peace and inclusion, particularly in the wake of social challenges that intensified following the 2019 Easter attacks.

With Sri Lanka increasingly vulnerable to climate disasters, which disproportionately affect women and girls, the project highlights the urgent need for inclusive, community-led solutions. It places special emphasis on the contributions of women, persons with disabilities, and marginalised groups in driving climate adaptation and resilience.

To mark the impact of the initiative, a one-day public event titled “Elevate ‘25” will be held on 1 July 2025 at the Sapphire Banquet Hall, BMICH, Colombo, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Organised with the support of 11 civil society organisations across 12 districts, the event will feature:

  • Project showcases
  • Interactive panel discussions
  • Awareness sessions
  • Forum theatre
  • Puppet shows
  • Games and other engaging activities

The event will highlight the intersectionality of gender, SRHR, social cohesion, and climate justice—encouraging policy dialogue and stakeholder engagement to bridge critical gaps in advocacy and action.
