A man from Assam, India, has gone viral on social media after being divorced in an unusual and over-the-top celebration.

Manik Ali, a resident of Baraliyapar village in Nalbari district, took to the streets after officially divorcing his wife, pouring 40 litres of milk over himself in what he described as a symbolic act of freedom. Dressed in a white vest and blue jeans, Ali declared into the camera, “I am free from today,” as milk streamed down his body — a moment that quickly became an internet sensation.

According to Indian media outlet Northeast Live, Ali had attempted to save the marriage for the sake of their daughter, despite his wife allegedly eloping twice with her lover. However, repeated infidelity and abandonment left him distressed, leading him to legally end the relationship.

The video, which was shared on Instagram via the handle @zindagi.gulzar.h, has racked up over three million views and sparked a flurry of online reactions. While some social media users supported Ali’s move as a bold declaration of closure, others criticised him for wasting milk — a basic commodity in many Indian households.

“This shows how self-centred people can be. If this is what peace looks like to you, go for it, brother. But you’ve only proved how immature you are,” one user commented. Another said bluntly, “Good decision.”

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time such a post-divorce celebration has made headlines in India. Last year, a man in Haryana threw a lavish party to commemorate his divorce, complete with cakes and a banner marking the dates of his marriage and separation.
