Popular model Piumi Hansamali has issued an apology after her teenage son was involved in an incident where he allegedly assaulted a three-wheeler driver following an accident involving one of his close friends.

In a Facebook post, Piumi Hansamali explained that the incident occurred when her son’s longtime childhood friend was thrown off a motorbike after being hit by a three-wheeler. Deeply upset by seeing his injured friend, her son allegedly reacted in anger and assaulted the three-wheeler driver.

“My son has no siblings, and this friend has been with him since childhood. They are like brothers. He got angry after seeing his friend injured and ended up hitting the three-wheeler driver,” Piumi Hansamali wrote.

She acknowledged that violence is unacceptable and that, as a mother, she does not condone her son’s actions. “He is completely at fault,” she admitted, adding that she personally apologised to the driver, his wife, and their children at the police station.

Piumi also clarified that the three-wheeler had fallen into a canal during the commotion, allegedly because the driver had forgotten to apply the handbrake while rushing to check on the injured child. She said she had promised to repair the vehicle and cover all medical expenses for the driver.

Addressing the public criticism that followed the incident, she pleaded with media outlets and social media users not to misrepresent her son. “Please don’t label him a criminal. He’s a good-hearted child who acted out of distress,” she said.

She added that despite the negative media attention, she was prepared to face the consequences but urged people not to attack a 14-year-old child. “He’s now at home and we took appropriate disciplinary actions to be sure that he won’t do such thing in the future. He’s not some monster as portrayed,” she wrote.
