The Fraud Investigation Bureau (FIB) informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (13 December) that it has launched an investigation into several candidates from the recent Presidential Election and their representatives for failing to submit proper expense reports, as required under the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act.

FIB officials presented facts to the court regarding seven complaints filed by the Election Commission over non-compliance with the Election Expenditure Act No. 03 of 2023.

In the court, the FIB explained that all candidates and their representatives were mandated to submit detailed reports on election expenses to the Election Commission by 13 October. However, several candidates and their representatives have yet to comply, which constitutes a violation of the law.

The FIB requested the court to fix a date to report on the progress of their investigations. In response, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court ordered the FIB to conduct a thorough inquiry and submit a progress report by 14 March 2025.
