The University of Kelaniya marked a significant academic milestone with the inauguration of the 10th batch of its prestigious Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme, held on 6 August 2025 at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel, Colombo. The event celebrated nearly a decade of excellence since the inception of the programme in 2016 by the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies.

The DBA programme is recognised both locally and internationally as a rigorous, research-oriented qualification. It is classified under Level 12 of the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF), placing it at the highest level of academic and professional education in the country. Designed for senior professionals, the programme aims to bridge academic knowledge with industry practice, allowing participants to generate impactful research and contribute meaningfully to business leadership and strategic development.

This year’s inauguration brought together a wide range of participants, including senior university officials, academic staff members, distinguished professionals from the business and public sectors, and the newly admitted cohort of candidates. The atmosphere reflected a sense of accomplishment and a renewed commitment to academic excellence and professional growth.

The agenda of the ceremony included an introduction to the programme’s structure, learning outcomes, and academic expectations. Attendees were given an overview of the research-centred approach of the DBA, which focuses on solving real-world problems through evidence-based inquiry and strategic thinking. The curriculum is carefully designed to encourage analytical, critical, and reflective skills, equipping candidates with the tools necessary for high-level decision-making in complex business environments.

The ceremony was graced by a distinguished panel of university officials and industry professionals. Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, participated as the Chief Guest, marking the significance of the occasion. Professor Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, delivered the welcome address, reflecting on the growth and evolution of the DBA programme since its inception. He highlighted its role in shaping business leadership in Sri Lanka and underscored the importance of strengthening academic–industry collaboration. He also encouraged the incoming cohort to engage in meaningful, application-oriented research that responds to contemporary business and economic challenges.

A key highlight of the event was a special address by Dr Vageesha Gunasekara, Senior Economist at UNDP Sri Lanka, who delivered an inspiring keynote speech on the role of research and policy in shaping resilient economies. Dr Gunasekara encouraged the new batch to pursue interdisciplinary research that supports evidence-based decision-making in both the public and private sectors.

Another notable aspect of the event was the diversity of the 10th intake, which includes participants from various industries, sectors, and leadership backgrounds. This diversity enriches the learning experience, fostering peer-to-peer knowledge exchange and cross-sectoral insights.

The ceremony concluded with a networking session, enabling the new candidates to connect with faculty members, fellow participants, and industry stakeholders. This informal interaction set the stage for collaborative learning and long-term professional relationships.

The inauguration of the 10th batch signifies not only the programme’s longevity but also its growing reputation as a leading doctoral-level qualification in Sri Lanka. As the new cohort embarks on their academic journey, the University of Kelaniya continues to strengthen its commitment to advancing business research, fostering leadership, and contributing to national and global development through education.
