The Embilipitiya Magistrate’s Court today (18) ordered the remand of former Sabaragamuwa Provincial Minister of Highways and Sports Athula Kumara Rahubadda until 2 October.

Rahubadda was arrested yesterday (17) by the Financial and Commercial Crimes Investigation Division (FCCID) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with alleged financial irregularities linked to several projects implemented under his ministry during 2016–2017.

When the suspect was produced before court today, CID officers informed the magistrate that out of 77 projects initiated during the relevant period, funds had been spent on 15 projects that were never implemented.

After considering the submissions, the magistrate ordered that the suspect be remanded, noting that the alleged misappropriation had caused a loss of approximately Rs. 70 million to the government.
